About ID75

The School of Design at Carnegie Mellon is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the official formation of the Industrial Design program (est. 1934) with a series of events to be held on campus during homecoming weekend (October 30-31) and throughout the year.

Please contribute.

In advance of these events, we are asking you to provide examples of your student work, your professional work, and stories about journeys in design and beyond. We're relying on our alumni to help us provide the most accurate and rich representation of our history. We are colleting these now; please spread the word. For more information, contact Mark Baskinger at baskinger@cmu.edu or 412 268 9843.

Industrial Design

The Industrial Design (ID) program teaches students to design products in support of human activities and interactions. We emphasize human observation, modeling, and testing, while preserving the richness of the visual and formal traditions in the field. Our interpretation of “product” is broad: it includes services and systems as well as tangible artifacts.

Our Industrial Design alumni work in a broad range of consulting firms, corporate design groups, and individual consultancies. While a majority remains closely connected to the design profession, others have taken design thinking into the fields of broadcasting, public policy, and environmental advocacy.

Contributing

As part of our efforts we're looking to collect original work, slides, high resolution scans/photos, or color prints of your student and professional work. We're also interested in hearing from our alumni about their university years and their careers since. Please consider filling out a survey and sending us some work; we'd love to hear from you.

Tell your story

Please share your history with us through this survey and tell us what life was like as a student and what you've done since graduation.

Tell your story

We're hoping to write a piece on the Women of ID throughout our history. Did you know that three of the initial five students were women? Did you know that our first degreed ID graduate was a woman?

We invite you to share

Send us your student, professional, or recreational artifacts from your experience in Design. We'd like to use this work in publications and in building our understanding of our history.
